چکیده

The finding that the synapses relaying sensory input to the cortex may have different properties than intracortical synapses has implications not only for sensory processing, but for the role of noise in neural computation as well.

Optimal Information Storage in Noisy Synapses under Resource Constraints

Experimental investigations have revealed that synapses possess interesting and, in some cases, unexpected properties. We propose a theoretical framework that accounts for three of these properties: typical central synapses are noisy, the distribution of synaptic weights among central synapses is wide, and synaptic connectivity between neurons is sparse. We also comment on the possibility that ...

Efficient Transmission of Subthreshold Signals in Complex Networks of Spiking Neurons

We investigate the efficient transmission and processing of weak, subthreshold signals in a realistic neural medium in the presence of different levels of the underlying noise. Assuming Hebbian weights for maximal synaptic conductances--that naturally balances the network with excitatory and inhibitory synapses--and considering short-term synaptic plasticity affecting such conductances, we foun...

The comparison of the effects of acute and repeated morphine administration on fast synaptic transmission in magnocellular neurons of supraoptic nucleus, plasma vasopressin levels, and urine volume of male rats

The activity of the magnocellular neurons (MCNs) of supraoptic nucleus (SON) is regulated by a variety of excitatory and inhibitory inputs. Opioids are one of the important compounds that affect these inputs at SON synapses. In this study, whole-cell patch clamp recording of SON neurons was used to investigate the effect of acute and repeated morphine administration on spontaneous inhibitory an...

Dynamic synapse: a new concept of neural representation and computation.

Presynaptic mechanisms influencing the probability of neurotransmitter release from an axon terminal, such as facilitation, augmentation, and presynaptic feedback inhibition, are fundamental features of biological neurons and are cardinal physiological properties of synaptic connections in the hippocampus. The consequence of these presynaptic mechanisms is that the probability of release become...
